Iran launches three satellites into space 

  • Iran has announced the successful launch of three satellites into space using a rocket that has experienced multiple setbacks in the past. This achievement marks the latest advancement in a program that the Western nations claim is enhancing Tehran’s ballistic missile capabilities.
  • This launch transpires amidst escalating tensions in the broader West Asian region due to Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, heightening concerns about the potential for a regional confrontation.
  • The satellites, named Mahda, Kayhan-2, and Hatef-1, serve distinct purposes. Mahda is characterized as a research satellite, while Kayhan and Hatef are nano satellites designed for global positioning and communication, respectively.
  • According to Iran’s Information and Communications Technology Minister, Isa Zarepour, Mahda has already transmitted signals back to Earth.

Indian pair of Rhythm Sangwan and Ujjwal Malik claim 1st gold at ISSF Shooting World Cup

  • Rhythm Sangwan and Ujjwal Malik from India grabbed the first gold at the ISSF Shooting World Cup 2024 in Cairo. They outplayed the Armenian duo of Elmira Karapetyan and Benik Khlghatyan in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.
  • In another event, Arjun Babuta and Sonam Uttam Maskar bagged silver in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event but lost to Great Britain’s Seonaid McIntosh and Dean Bale in the final.
  • Moving to air rifle shooting, Indian Olympian Divyansh Singh Panwar secured gold in the men’s event, setting a world record score in the final. Sonam Uttam Maskar, making her debut in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup, clinched silver in the women’s 10-metre event in Cairo. The 21-year-old’s score of 253.7 surpassed Chinese Sheng Lihao’s 253.3 at the Asian Games last year.
  • With two gold and three silver medals after three days of competition, India leads the table in the season-opening World Cup stage. This marked Divyansh’s fifth overall World Cup stage gold and his second individual gold since Putian in 2019.

Australian Open: Jannik Sinner defeats Daniil Medvedev in Men’s Singles final to win his 1st grand slam title

  • In the Australian Open men’s singles final in Melbourne, Italy’s Jannik Sinner beat Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. The 22-year-old, seeded fourth, came back strong after losing the first two sets to secure a big win over Medvedev, grabbing his first major title at the Australian Open.
  • This victory made Sinner the first Italian guy to win a Grand Slam since Adriano Panatta in 1976. Ranked fourth globally, Sinner only dropped one set on his way to the final and ended Novak Djokovic’s 33-match winning streak in the semi-final.
  • Sinner joins a small club as the second player to come back from being two sets down in an Australian Open final and still win. The first was Rafael Nadal, who did it against Medvedev in 2022.

ICC lifts suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket after two-months

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has ended the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket right away. Sri Lanka Cricket is back as an ICC member after a two-month suspension.
  • The suspension happened on November 10, 2023, because Sri Lanka Cricket didn’t meet its responsibilities as an ICC member. They were supposed to handle their affairs independently and make sure there’s no government interference in how cricket is managed, regulated, and run in Sri Lanka.

Ranbir Kapoor wins the award for Best Actor at Filmfare 2024, Alia Bhatt named Best Actress

  • Ranbir Kapoor clinched the Best Actor honor at the 2024 Filmfare Awards for his role in ‘Animal’, marking his fourth win in this category. 
  • On the other hand, Alia Bhatt secured the Best Actress title for her performance in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. 
  • This win marked Alia’s fifth Best Actress Filmfare award, putting her on par with the records held by Nutan and Kajol. Additionally, the film ’12th Fail’, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, was honored with the Best Film award.

Nitish Kumar becomes Bihar’s CM for 9th time 

  • Nitish Kumar has become the Chief Minister of Bihar for the ninth time, setting a new record, and he got support from the BJP for this. Before this, he resigned as the head of the ‘Mahagathbandhan,’ which included the Indian National Congress and Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). 
  • Nitish had earlier left the BJP in 2022 to team up with the Opposition.
  • Nitish Kumar first became the Chief Minister in 2000, and back then, he was against the RJD, basing his campaign on opposing Lalu. In 2013, Nitish broke away from the NDA and joined hands with the RJD in the 2015 election.

US firm signs agreement with Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department

  • The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has teamed up with an American company, M/s Anjali Investment LLC, to build a 100-room resort in Ayodhya. 
  • This collaboration aims to improve the facilities for tourists, boost tourism in the area, and provide excellent services to visitors. 
  • The person leading the American firm is Ramesh Nangurnoori, an entrepreneur from Hyderabad involved in real estate and other businesses in the US.

India sees itself at the fifth spot in WTC rankings after Hyderabad loss

  • India has slipped to fifth place, falling behind Bangladesh, in the World Test Championship standings. This happened after their unexpected 28-run loss to England in the first Test in Hyderabad. Initially, India briefly held the top spot after drawing a series against South Africa but was surpassed by Australia after their win over Pakistan.
  • Rohit Sharma’s team saw a decline in their accumulated percentage points, dropping from 54.16 after the South Africa series to the current 43.33. In the fourth innings of the first Test in Hyderabad, chasing a target of 231, India was all out for 202, facing a collapse orchestrated by England’s Tom Hartley (7/62).
  • Australia is leading the WTC standings, followed by South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, all tied with 50 percentage points, occupying the second, third, and fourth positions. India is now placed fifth, followed by Pakistan, West Indies, England, and Sri Lanka.

Rolls-Royce signs a Pact With Azad Engineering for making Complex Defence Aero-Engine Components In India

  • Rolls-Royce has shared news about teaming up with Azad Engineering for a long-term deal to make and provide intricate parts for defense aircraft engines. In this partnership, Azad Engineering, located in Hyderabad, will become part of the worldwide supply chain for complex components needed for Rolls-Royce’s advanced aero engines.
  • Rolls-Royce has a solid presence in India, with local partnerships, collaborations, a strong supply chain, a talented workforce, engineering expertise, digital solutions, and service delivery capabilities.

Samsung R&D Institute, IIT Kanpur Sign MoU For Joint Research

  • Samsung R&D Institute in Noida (SRI-Noida) and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) have made a deal. 
  • This five-year collaboration aims to help students get ready for future jobs in the industry through joint research. 
  • Besides working on research projects, the agreement also focuses on giving Samsung engineers opportunities to improve their skills in important tech areas like AI, Cloud, and other emerging technologies.
  • This partnership allows IIT Kanpur students, faculty, and Samsung engineers to collaborate on research projects covering areas like health, visuals, frameworks, and B2B security. 
  • The effort also includes working on cutting-edge technologies like generative AI and Cloud. The agreement was signed by Kyungyun Roo, Managing Director of SRI-Noida, and Professor Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development at IIT Kanpur.
