1. Ministry of Statistics to Publish GDP with New Base Year
The Ministry of Statistics will publish GDP with a new base year of 2022-2023 in February 2026. The base year will also be changed for retail inflation based on the Consumer Price Index and factory production growth based on the Index of Industrial Production. Currently, the base year for GDP calculation is 2011-2012. The Advisory Committee on National Accounts Statistics, chaired by Biswanath Goldar, will complete this work by early 2026. The government is making several adjustments to improve GDP calculation.
2. Best Tourism Village Titles Awarded to Madhya Pradesh Villages
Three villages in Madhya Pradesh have been given the title of Best Tourism Village by the Central Government. The villages are Pranpur, Sabarwani, and Ladpura Khas. Pranpur, located in Ashoknagar district, received the title in the Craft category. Sabarwani in Chhindwara district and Ladpura Khas in Niwari district received the title in the Responsible Tourism category. All three villages were recognized as part of the Best Tourism Village Competition 2024 organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
3. Udhayanidhi Stalin Appointed Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
Udhayanidhi Stalin has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Four other MLAs of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam took oath as cabinet ministers. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. Udhayanidhi Stalin was serving as the Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development. Under his new role, he will also oversee the Planning and Development portfolio.
4. BCCI Inaugurates New National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) inaugurated the new National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Spread over an area of over 40 acres, the facility aims to become India’s hub for developing cricket talent and promoting sports science. According to the BCCI, the Centre of Excellence has a total of three grounds and 86 pitches, including both indoor and outdoor fields, providing comprehensive training facilities. The main ground, Ground A, has an 85-yard boundary line with 13 Mumbai red soil pitches.
5. Union Health Ministry Releases New Guidelines on Passive Euthanasia
The Union Health Ministry released a new draft of guidelines on passive euthanasia. The new guidelines suggest that doctors should take a considered decision about withdrawing life support for critically ill patients based on specific situations. The guidelines aim to ensure that decisions are taken in the best interest of patients by considering factors such as brain stem death and informed refusal by the patient or their family.
6. Central Government Declares Area Near Gir Protected Area as Eco-Sensitive Zone
The central government has declared 1.84 lakh hectares of area near Gir protected area as an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ). The area within 10 km of the outer boundary of Gir protected area is considered as ESZ. According to the notification, the distance of the eco-sensitive zone from the sanctuary will be from 2.78 km to 9.50 km. This ESZ includes 196 villages and 17 rivers of three districts. The new ESZ will include more than 24 thousand hectares of forest area and 1.59 lakh hectares of non-forest area.
7. Indian Team Wins Seven Medals at Junior World Wushu Championships
The Indian team won seven medals, including two gold, one silver, and four bronze medals at the Junior World Wushu Championships in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. India’s Aryan won the gold medal by defeating China’s Gang Huanran in the 48 kg weight category of the boys’ junior group. Shaurya won another gold medal by defeating his Iranian opponent Alireza Zamani in the boys’ 48 kg category.
8. India and Uzbekistan Signed Bilateral Investment Treaty
India and Uzbekistan signed a bilateral investment treaty to boost investor confidence. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Uzbekistan Deputy Prime Minister Khodjayev Jamshed Abdukhakimovich signed the treaty. The bilateral investment treaty will ensure appropriate protection for Uzbek investors in India and Indian investors in Uzbekistan. It will boost investor confidence by providing minimum standard treatment and non-discrimination. It will also ensure transparency transfer and compensation for losses.
