S&P Global Keeps India’s GDP Growth at 6.8% for FY25, Lowers China’s Forecast

S&P Global Ratings has maintained India’s GDP growth forecast at 6.8% for the fiscal year 2024-25, citing strong economic performance despite high interest rates. The rating agency also predicts India’s growth for FY26 at 6.9%. Meanwhile, China’s growth forecast for 2024 has been cut to 4.6%, reflecting challenges in its property sector and weak domestic demand. India’s growth is supported by government investments in infrastructure and a focus on controlling inflation, with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) expected to start cutting interest rates by October 2024.

Launch of ‘Paridhi 24×25’ by India’s Union Minister of Textiles

On September 5, 2024, Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, unveiled India’s fashion trend book, “Paridhi 24×25”. This landmark event also saw the launch of a bilingual web portal, VisioNxt, and an AI Taxonomy e-book aimed at empowering India’s fashion and textiles industry. Over 150 industry leaders from fashion, retail, and craft sectors attended the event.

VisioNxt, a NIFT-backed initiative, will provide real-time fashion insights tailored for Indian consumers, reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign trend agencies. The platform blends Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) to create culturally relevant fashion forecasts, marking a significant step in India’s goal to become a global fashion trendsetter.

Additionally, the event celebrated the inauguration of the NIFT Begusarai Extension Centre, which will enhance skills in tailoring and garment construction, contributing to the Prime Minister’s vision of empowering marginalized communities through skill development.

Jaishankar Attends Historic Joint Ministerial Meeting of L.69 and C-10

New York, September 26 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar participated in the inaugural Joint Ministerial Meeting of the L.69 and C-10 groupings at the 79th United Nations General Assembly. Emphasizing the need for reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Jaishankar called for text-based negotiations to achieve concrete outcomes.

During the meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Ralph E. Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, ministers highlighted the importance of increasing representation for developing countries and underrepresented regions in both permanent and non-permanent UNSC categories.

Jaishankar also engaged with various diplomats, including his counterparts from Bhutan and Brazil, emphasizing collaboration on global issues. The discussions reaffirmed commitments to reform and the necessity for greater inclusivity within the UNSC.

India Climbs to 39th Place in Global Innovation Index 2024

India has made a significant leap in the 2024 Global Innovation Index, rising to 39th place among 133 economies, up from 81st just nine years ago. This positions India as the top performer in Central and Southern Asia and first among lower-middle-income economies.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has also secured 4th place in the WIPO Science and Technology Cluster Ranking, with cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai in the top 100 S&T clusters.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced this achievement, highlighting India’s 7th position in intangible asset intensity. The report notes India ranks 33rd in innovation outputs and 44th in innovation inputs, showcasing the growing impact of Indian innovators in the global landscape.

Air Marshal SP Dharkar Appointed as IAF Vice Chief

Air Marshal SP Dharkar has been appointed as the new Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), succeeding Air Marshal AP Singh. Dharkar, who has over 3,600 flying hours and a distinguished career, will assume his new role after the current Chief of Air Staff transitions.

A graduate of the Rashtriya Indian Military College, National Defence Academy, and Air War College (USA), Dharkar has held several key positions in the IAF, including commanding a frontline fighter squadron and serving as the first Director General of the Defence Space Agency. He most recently led the Eastern Air Command.

CM-SATH Scheme Launched to Support Meritorious Students

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has officially launched the CM-SATH scheme, aimed at providing financial assistance to top-performing students in Tripura for their higher education. Under the scheme, 200 students excelling in the Madhyamik and HS+2 examinations will receive a monthly stipend of ₹5,000. The initiative, designed to promote quality education and support disadvantaged groups, will cost the state ₹1.2 crore in its first year, increasing to ₹3 crore annually from the third year. Beneficiaries will be selected by District Education Officers to ensure fairness.

Kamal Chawla Wins Gold at IBSF World 6-Red Snooker Championship

Indian snooker player Kamal Chawla secured his first-ever IBSF World 6-Red Snooker Championship title with a 6-2 victory over Pakistan’s Asjad Iqbal in the final held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. MP State Election Commission Successfully Conducts First Paperless Voting in India

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh [India], September 12, 2024: In a pioneering move, the Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission successfully implemented a paperless voting process for the first time in India. The pilot project was conducted during the Panchayat by-election at polling station-295 in Ratua Ratanpur village, Bhopal, on September 12.

The Secretary of the State Election Commission, Abhishek Singh, explained that the traditional manual process of filling 26 forms during Panchayat elections was computerized. This change not only reduced human effort and minimized errors but also increased transparency. Thumb impressions and electronic signatures were used to verify voters’ identities, ensuring that the voting process was secure and accurate.

Singh further stated that while this trial was limited to one polling booth, there are plans to gradually expand paperless voting across the state in the coming years.

Shah Alam Stadium in Malaysia Demolished Due to Safety Concerns

The iconic Shah Alam Stadium, once a major sports and entertainment venue in Malaysia, is being demolished following safety concerns and years of neglect. Declared unsafe in 2020, the dismantling process started in July 2024 and is expected to be completed by May 2025.

The stadium, which could accommodate up to 80,000 people and hosted significant events such as the 2017 SEA Games and international concerts, will be replaced by the Shah Alam Sports Complex. The new facility, with a capacity of 35,000 to 45,000, is set to open by 2029 and will primarily serve football matches.

India and Egypt Strengthen Trade Ties at 6th Joint Trade Committee Session

New Delhi: The 6th Session of the India-Egypt Joint Trade Committee (JTC) was held in New Delhi from 16th to 17th September 2024, co-chaired by India’s Economic Adviser, Priya P. Nair, and Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Investment, Yahya Elwathik Bellah. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas such as pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, MSMEs, and trade settlements. Both sides highlighted the need for swift action on market access issues and agreed to sign an MoU between India’s National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) and Egypt’s MSME Development Agency (MSMEDA). The next JTC meeting will be held in Egypt in 2026.
