BAU To Get GI Tags for 55 Distinctive Products

Building on the triumph of obtaining Geographical Indication (GI) tags for five agricultural products in Bihar, the Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), in collaboration with the agriculture department, has launched an ambitious plan. The goal is to compile a comprehensive database comprising at least 55 more products from various districts to secure GI tags for each.

Current GI Tags Status

The state presently boasts 13 products adorned with GI tags, including the esteemed Katarni dhaan (rice), Jardalu mango from Bhagalpur, Mithila makhana (fox nut), Magahi paan (betel leaf) from Nawada, and Shahi litchi from Muzaffarpur, all recently honored with this distinctive recognition.

BAU Takes the Lead

Responding to the agriculture department’s directive, BAU has initiated the process of identifying unique products from each district and is taking the necessary steps to secure coveted GI tags for them. The primary objectives are twofold: to spotlight Bihar’s unique farm products and heritage on both national and international stages and to cultivate a market for these distinct offerings.

Vice-Chancellor’s Insight

Dr. D R Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of BAU, emphasized the significance of a GI tag. It not only associates products with specific geographical regions of origin but also provides valuable intellectual property rights. To fulfill this mission, a specialized committee has been formed to create a comprehensive database and subsequently work on obtaining GI tags. Of the 55 identified products, 29 are crops, three each belong to animal and fishery varieties, and the remaining 20 are diverse food products.
