Chandrayaan-4 Mission: India’s Next Lunar Exploration

India’s space agency, ISRO, is getting ready for its next lunar mission, Chandrayaan-4, after the success of Chandrayaan-3 in 2023. ISRO chief S Somnath recently shared some important details about the mission.

Objective of Chandrayaan-4:

Chandrayaan-4 aims to collect samples from the Moon’s surface and bring them back to Earth for study. This is a big deal because only three other countries have been able to do this so far: the United States, the Soviet Union, and China.

What Chandrayaan-4 Will Do on the Moon:

  • Safe Landing: Chandrayaan-4 will try to land safely and softly on the Moon’s surface, which is crucial for the mission’s success.
  • Collecting Samples: The mission will show how to collect and store samples of rocks and soil from the Moon, which is very important for scientists.
  • Returning to Earth: After collecting samples, Chandrayaan-4 will lift off from the Moon, dock with a module in lunar orbit, and then head back to Earth with the samples.

Complexity and Parts of Chandrayaan-4:

Chandrayaan-4 is a tough mission. It involves landing on the Moon, taking off again, and docking with another module in lunar orbit before coming back to Earth. The mission will be done in two parts, with different parts launched using two different rockets called the LVM-3 and the PSLV.

The mission has five parts: the Propulsion Module, Descender Module, Ascender Module, Transfer Module, and Re-entry Module. Each part has a specific job to do to make the mission successful.
