Mahindra Group Appoints Amarjyoti Barua as Group Chief Financial Officer

  • The Mahindra Group has officially named Amarjyoti Barua as its Group Chief Financial Officer, effective from May 17 this year.
  • Amarjyoti Barua steps into this role, succeeding Manoj Bhatt, who, in turn, assumes the position of Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd (MHRIL), succeeding Kavinder Singh.
  • This transition at MHRIL follows the resignation of Kavinder Singh, as stated by Mahindra Group.
  • Both Barua and Bhatt assume their respective roles on May 17. Presently, Barua serves as the Executive Vice President for Group Strategy.
  • Vimal Agarwal, the current CFO of Mahindra Lifespaces Developers Ltd (MLDL), will now serve as CFO for MHRIL, while Avinash Bapat takes over as CFO of MLDL.
  • Barua joined the Mahindra Group in May last year, holding the position of Executive Vice President – Group Strategy. Before joining Mahindra, he had a significant tenure with Baker Hughes lasting over six years.
  • Bhatt brings with him experience from M&M Ltd and Tech Mahindra.

Carl Weathers, Celebrated Actor of ‘Rocky’ Fame, Passes Away at 76

  • Renowned Hollywood actor Carl Weathers, famous for his iconic role in ‘Rocky’ alongside Sylvester Stallone, has departed at the age of 76.
  • Born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Weathers graced the screen with his presence in over 75 films and TV shows throughout his illustrious 50-year career.
  • In addition to his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the ‘Rocky’ franchise, Weathers played Greef Karga in nine episodes of Disney+ Star Wars series, ‘The Mandalorian.’
  • He notably appeared in ‘Rocky II’ (1979) and ‘Rocky III’ (1982), where he trained Rocky Balboa to face the formidable Clubber Lang (Mr. T).
  • Weathers’ final venture in the ‘Rocky’ series was ‘Rocky IV’ (1985), where his character met his demise in the ring against Russian heavyweight Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). This information is as per Deadline.
  • Beyond ‘Rocky,’ Weathers showcased his talent in the 1987 film ‘Predator’ and played a memorable role in Adam Sandler’s ‘Happy Gilmore.’

PM Modi Inaugurates CLEA Commonwealth Attorneys and Solicitors General Conference

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumes the role of inaugurator at the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) – Commonwealth Attorneys and Solicitors General Conference in New Delhi.
  • The conference focuses on the theme “Cross-Border Challenges in Justice Delivery.”
  • Key discussions at the conference revolve around significant legal and justice issues, such as judicial transition, ethical dimensions of legal practice, executive accountability, and the reevaluation of modern-day legal education.
  • Participants include Attorney Generals and Solicitors from Commonwealth nations across Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Caribbean, along with various international delegations.
  • Serving as a unique platform, the conference fosters interaction among diverse stakeholders in the Commonwealth legal fraternity.
  • An exclusive round table conference tailored for Attorneys and Solicitors General aims to formulate a comprehensive roadmap to address challenges in legal education and transnational justice delivery.

India Launches Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at Eiffel Tower in Paris, France

  • In a momentous event, India officially introduced the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) against the backdrop of the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris.
  • The Indian Embassy in France, in its declaration, characterised this initiative as a pivotal step in aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of globalizing UPI.
  • The formal launch of UPI took place during the Republic Day reception held in France.
  • During his visit to France in July of the preceding year, Prime Minister Modi disclosed the collaboration between India and France to implement the UPI payment mechanism, marking its commencement from the renowned Eiffel Tower. Modi highlighted that Indian tourists in France can now conduct transactions in their native currency.

Indian-Origin Barrister Varun Ghosh Appointed to Australian Senate

  • Varun Ghosh, an Indian-origin barrister, has been officially designated to represent Western Australia (WA) in the Australian Senate by the Labour Party.
  • The 38-year-old Ghosh, affiliated with Francis Burt Chambers, was chosen by a joint sitting of the WA Parliament to succeed Senator Patrick Dodson.
  • Having joined the Labour party in Perth at the age of 17, Ghosh’s journey from the son of Indian immigrants to this significant political position is noteworthy.
  • With academic credentials from the University of Western Australia and the University of Cambridge, Ghosh’s professional background includes roles as a finance attorney in New York and a consultant for the World Bank in Washington, DC.

MoU Signed to Establish Hyderabad as Hub of AI Development, Innovation

  • The Telangana government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 3AI, India’s foremost platform for AI and Analytics leaders, to position Hyderabad and Telangana as global hubs for Artificial Intelligence (AI) development and innovation.
  • The primary goal of the MoU is to cultivate a community of AI and Analytics leaders from diverse enterprises, tech-service firms, local startups, and the Information Technology, Electronics & Communications (ITE&C) and Emerging Technologies Wing.
  • This collaboration aims to curate and host leadership roundtables and events centred around AI innovation and progress, fostering thought leadership and mindshare.

BJP Veteran LK Advani to be Awarded Bharat Ratna

  • BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani is set to be honoured with India’s highest civilian accolade, the ‘Bharat Ratna’, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • At 96 years old, Advani, a former BJP president, is the 50th individual to receive this esteemed award. His political journey includes multiple terms as BJP president, though he missed the opportunity to become India’s Prime Minister.
  • Notably, the Modi government has conferred the Bharat Ratna on seven individuals in the past decade.

Multiple Infrastructure Projects Worth Over £68 Billion to be Launched by Prime Minister in Sambalpur, Odisha

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Sambalpur in Odisha to inaugurate, dedicate, and lay the foundation stone for a series of infrastructure projects exceeding £68 billion.
  • The visit includes the inauguration of the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur, constructed on approximately 200 acres of land with a budget of about £402 million.
  • Projects such as the Dhamra-Angul Pipeline Section and the Neyveli Lignite Corporation Talabira Thermal Power Project will be inaugurated and have their foundation stones laid by the Prime Minister.
  • The visit also encompasses the dedication and foundation stone laying for railway projects, enhancing rail network capacity in western Odisha. Additionally, several national highways road sector projects, developed at around £2.11 billion, will be inaugurated.

Pawan Kumar Assumes Position of Chief Adviser (Cost) in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance

  • Following the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), Mr. Pawan Kumar, an officer of the Indian Cost Accounts Service (ICoAS) from the 1992 batch, has taken on the role of Chief Adviser (Cost) in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
  • Prior to this, Mr. Kumar served as the Additional Chief Adviser (Cost) and brings a wealth of experience from various Ministries/Departments and autonomous bodies, including the Tariff Commission, Delhi Development Authority, Director General of Trade Remedies, Department of Economic Affairs, and Department of Public Enterprises.
  • As a qualified Cost Accountant, Mr. Kumar played a crucial role in the development of a web-based Online Dashboard for performance evaluation of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) in the Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Finance. This initiative received the prestigious ‘Gold Award’ in the ‘e-Governance’ category in 2022 from a leading think tank.

Abhinav Bindra Chosen as Torchbearer for Paris 2024 Olympics

  • Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual gold medallist at the Olympic Games, has been selected as a torchbearer for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
  • Securing gold in the men’s 10m air rifle at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, Bindra will play a significant role in the Olympic torch relay scheduled from April 16 to July 26.
  • The relay, an ancient tradition preceding the Summer Games, will see the Olympic flame lit in Olympia, Greece, on April 16, before travelling to Athens. Crossing the Mediterranean on the Belem, a three-masted ship, the flame will land in Marseille on May 8.
  • Embarking on a 68-day-long Olympic Torch Relay across France, covering 65 territories, the torch will finally arrive in Paris, the host city, officially inaugurating the Paris 2024 Olympics on August 11.
  • Abhinav Bindra, also a member of the Athletes Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), underwent a comprehensive selection process that commenced on June 1 of the preceding year.
