Operation in Sultanpur: STF Confrontation with Notorious Gangster

As a part of latest current affairs that took place today, in a recent operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of the UP Police engaged with notorious gangster Vinod Upadhyay in Sultanpur during the night spanning Thursday and Friday.

Tip-off and Confrontation:

Acting on credible intelligence regarding Vinod’s presence in Sultanpur, the STF initiated a targeted manhunt to apprehend the listed criminal. The operation culminated in a tense exchange of gunfire, resulting in a person sustaining gunshot wounds who later identified himself as Vinod Upadhyay. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at the district hospital.

Arms Recovery:

Upon the confrontation, law enforcement recovered a factory-made submachine gun (9mm) and a Chinese 30mm pistol from Vinod’s possession, underscoring the potential threat he posed.

Increased Reward and Extortion Threats:

Earlier, on September 9, 2023, the reward on Vinod had been escalated from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. This decision followed Vinod’s menacing threat to kill the former additional district government counsel (criminal), Praveen Kumar Srivastava of Gulheria in Gorakhpur district, coupled with a demand for Rs 5 lakh in extortion.

Police Vigilance and Presence:

Vinod had been on the police radar for several days, with information pinpointing his presence in the district. The authorities revealed that he had come to Sultanpur with the intention of committing a homicide.

Gorakhpur Demolition and Legal Action:

In June 2023, the Gorakhpur police, in coordination with the district administration, took decisive action by demolishing Vinod’s illegally constructed house and commercial building, spanning over 7,000 square meters under the Gulharia police station. The demolition, approved by the Gorakhpur Development Authority, freed up land estimated to be worth Rs 500 crore, according to officials.

Criminal Record and Reward Offer:

Vinod Upadhyay faced a staggering total of 35 criminal cases, encompassing heinous offenses such as murders, dacoity, robbery, and violations under the Gangsters Act. In light of his criminal activities, a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh was announced for any information leading to his arrest.
